If you find that a humid commute or even a quick workout session leaves your hair looking oily, you are probably looking for a convenient, quick fix that makes your hair feel fresh and smell clean. After all, there is nothing worse than getting a blowout and having to wash it out the next day because the scalp is greasy. Thankfully, someone smart created dry shampoo so we can keep that blowout fresh and bouncy for days.

What Is Dry Shampoo?

Clayton Hair Salon dry shampooDry shampoo is a hair product that is made to reduce grease, oil, and dirt in your hair if you don’t have the time to wash it. Unlike wet conditioners and shampoos, dry shampoo is applied to your hair while it’s dry — hence the name. There is no need to wash out the dry shampoo. Some people swear by dry shampoo for extending the life of a salon blowout or touching up their hair after a sweaty workout.

What Exactly Does Dry Shampoo Do?

This shampoo product is a powder that, once sprayed on your scalp, absorbs excess oil and grime from the scalp. Most dry shampoo formulas contain ingredients like silica and starch that attach themselves to excess oil which is then shaken out when the hair is brushed or moved.

Is Dry Shampoo Effective?

Dry shampoo, if applied correctly, is going to make your hair appear less oily and more put-together. But one thing that can be a bit confusing is the word “shampoo” in this product’s name. Dry shampoo is not meant to clean or wash your hair, by any means. It is intended to be used as a kind of disguise for dirt and grease on your scalp. Dry shampoos are not a replacement for washing your hair.

How to Use Dry Shampoo?

  • The dry shampoo should be held four to six inches away from your hair. Spray the dry shampoo directly at the roots. Concentrate on spraying the oiliest areas: the nape of the neck, the crown, and along the hairline. Spritz one section of hair at a time.
  • Use your fingertips to massage the sprayed dry shampoo into your scalp and roots. The massage will make sure that the oil-absorbing action can take place evenly across the head and that there is no white residue. Flip your head upside down while massaging the product into hair if you want extra lift and volume.
  • Smooth out hair with a brush or comb. If you want to restyle it for that day, grab your hot tools and go for it.

In a pinch dry shampoo is an excellent “pick me up” for your hair. Keep a can on hand for those times in between shampoos.
