Avoiding Static Electricity in Your Hair

When the air is dry, frizz and flyaways happen even to the best of us, and they always occur when we least want them. Sometimes, escaping static electricity seems impossible, no matter how often we moisturize our hair. Keep reading to find out more about what causes static hair and hair tips on how to tame it.

What Causes Hair Static?

Clayton Hair Salon hair tipsWhen two objects of conducting materials rub against each other, static electricity appears. The process of rubbing causes electrons from one object to be transferred to the other. The object that gains electrons gets a negative charge while the object that loses the electrons receives a positive charge.

This reaction occurs when a hat rubs against the strands of your hair or when you use a plastic comb or brush to style your hair. The two objects swap electrons, which causes an electric charge to build upon your hair.

Ways to Get Rid of the Static Hair

Use an Ionic Blow Dryer: For people who use hair dryers, an ionic blow dryer may be the answer. These blow dryers emit negatively charged ions when used. What does this mean? By emitting negative ions. These blow dryers offer a neutralizing effect, by attaching themselves to the positively charged hair. The ionic molecules don’t evaporate the water molecules; they break them down. This result is beneficial because it avoids stripping the hair of its moisture, which means less static.

Metal is more conductive than plastic and will cause the electric charges that build up in the hair to discharge. This process reduces the amount of static present.

Use Moisturizing Conditioner: Because dry hair tends to promote static, you should use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. When it comes to your hair care routine, choose products that are not only nourishing but also free from silicones, parabens, and dyes for smooth, shiny, healthy hair.

Say Goodbye to Your Hair Towel: Believe it or not, your hair towel might be your biggest enemy if you are dealing with static hair. Drying your hair with a grooved towel pulls apart your hair strands, which disrupts your hair and creates the frizz and the flyaways. On the other hand, a cotton T-shirt is less abrasive and absorbs excess water, which helps to keep our hair from becoming frizzy as it dries.
